Berry Elementary School — A Vibrant Learning Environment
Architecture and interiors photography for Joeris & HKS
Berry Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, designed by HKS Architects and built by Joeris General Contractors, exemplifies the evolution of educational architecture. As an architectural photographer, capturing this project was an opportunity to tell a story of innovation, community, and color through design.
From the exterior, Berry Elementary balances striking material contrasts with warm, welcoming facades. Brickwork, smooth metal panels, and expanses of glass define the building’s varied forms, creating a campus that is both modern and contextually grounded. The design is clearly student-centered—open courtyards, playful landscaping, and generous seating areas encourage interaction, movement, and community engagement.
Inside, the architectural narrative becomes even more dynamic. Light floods the interiors through large windows and clerestories, highlighting bright color accents and thoughtfully designed learning spaces. Classrooms are flexible and cheerful, tailored for collaboration and creativity, while corridors and shared spaces are visually engaging—often blurring the line between circulation and interaction.
Specialty areas such as the library, gymnasium, and cafeteria are not just functional; they are vibrant, expressive environments that enhance the daily experience for students and staff. The cafeteria features bold graphic lines and a uniquely sculpted stage surround, while the gym energizes with strong orange accents and well-integrated lighting.
Architecturally, Berry Elementary succeeds in fostering curiosity and comfort, combining spatial efficiency with imaginative design. Photographing this project meant highlighting the way HKS's thoughtful architecture works hand-in-hand with Joeris's quality execution to support a next-generation learning environment.
For schools like Berry Elementary, architecture is more than structure—it's part of the curriculum.
